In Memoriam
Miss Grace Sewing
Forty years of devoted teaching and
guidance came to a sudden close on
April 7, 1965, when Miss Grace Sewing,
67, passed away.
After graduating from Washington
University, Miss Sewing started teaching
at Granite City, in 1920. Although she
taught math courses, here, she also held
a degree in history. In 1926, Miss
Sewing became dean of girls for five
years. She then returned to teaching for
another thirty-five years. June 4,1965,
was to be her last day of teaching before
retirement.
Miss Sewing was an outstanding
advisor in the Student Council movement.
On January 16, 1937, the first district convention of student councils south of Chicago was held.
This convention was organized by Miss Sewing, and it was advised by her for nineteen years.
It grew in size from seven to more then one hundred and fifty schools. Today, this district is
one of the largest in the state.
Miss Sewing lived in St. Louis all of her life. She was very close to her sister, Edna, who
preceeded her in death about three years ago. All who knew her acutely feel the loss. She was
truly a great lady.

Lawrence C. McCauley
Our principal, Mr, McCauley, was
born in Granite City, and educated in
the Granite City school system. During
his senior year at G.C.H.S., he was
president of his class. He belonged to
the literary society, and was an out-
standing athlete, lettering in football,
basketball, baseball, and track. After
his graduation in 1952, he became an
employee of Granite City Steel
Company.
Two years later, he enrolled in the
University of Missouri. There, he
lettered in football, three years, and he
also received Freshman numerals in
football and baseball. In 1931, Mr.
McCauley received a B.A. degree in
journalism. He then began teaching at
Washington School in Granite City. In
June, 1935, he married. Dorothy, his
wife, is a math teacher at Collidge
Junior High School. In September 1935,
Mr. McCauley began his career at
G.C.H.S. as an English teacher and
assistant football coach. During 1941,
and 1942, he was head football coach.
In 1943, he accepted a commission in
the United States Navy. In the same
year, his only child, Elizabeth Ann,
was born.
After the war, Mr. McCauley came
back to Granite High and coached the
football, wrestling, and baseball teams.
In 1946, the G.C.H.S. football team was
the conference champion. In 1948, his
baseball team took the State Champion-
ship, and in 1951, the baseball Con-
ference Championship.
Mr. McCauley received his
master's degree in Administration and
Guidance in 1951, from Washington
University. The same year he became
Dean of Boys. Mr. McCauley was named
Assistant Principal in 1953, and
Principal of Granite City High in 1956.

Oh, Beautiful for fellowship,
For inspiration true,
For Loyalty and Truth sublime,
For Self-denial too,
Dear Alma Mater, Granite High,
God shed his grace cm thee;
With rich success, thy children bless.
We'll e're be true to thee.
ALMA
MATER
With gratitude, dear Granite High
We'll always think of thee
May thy sweet memories linger long
When we have gone from thee:
Dear Alma Mater, Granite High
Of thee our thoughts shall be:
When our school days are past and gone,
We'll e're be true to thee.
Immortal school that e're will be
Praised by the Poet's pen,
Who taught us how to love and live
Among our fellow man;
Fair Alma Mater, Granite High,
A blessing rest on thee
That your success be nobleness
We'll e're be true to thee.

ON GRADUATION
by Linda Whitten
I take one look before I go
At all the places I've loved so,
Filled with mem'ries of days gone by.
The classrooms where my friends and I
Have toiled and laughed; the stage where we.
With trembling hand and knocking knee,
Made our debut; the staircases;
The halls; the most obscure places
With sweet memories touch my heart.
And so, with sadness, I depart
Into the world. A tear breaks free.
I surely hope no one will see.

WRESTLING CHAMPIONS
The Wrestlingest Warriors ever,
Granite's 1965 Grapplers, climaxed their
greatest season in Granite City wrestling
history by sharing the IHSA State Cham-
pionship with the wrestling Rams of Oak
Lawn's Reavis High School.
Co-captain Steve Cavanaugh, 112, and
Bill Fuchs, 95, were runners-up in their
respective weights and Co-captain Rich
Bledsoe, 120, was third. Heavyweight John
Evenden and Gary Forshee, 180, also scored
for the Warriors.
In addition to a 16-1 dual meet re-
cord, tournaments won by the 1965 Warriors
were the IHSA Sectional Championships at
Woodriver and the IHSA District at Granite
City; the Southwestern conference cham-
pionship; the Holiday Invitation champion-
ship, and Quads at Granite City, Ritenour,
and Hazelwood.
These victories were due, in large
measure, to the expert coaching of Mr.
William Schmitt.

Our 1965-1966 "Fighting Warriors"
basketball team had a new look this
year. It is a new head coach, M r .
Ralph Sackett, a Collinsville graduate.
He brought with him new tactics and
plans to use against our opponents.
The team was aided by the successful
shooting of Captain Larry Ripka, and
also by Jim Hentzel from New Athens.
Terry Moore, Elmer Wortham, and
Bill O'Neill led our successful Warriors
in rebounding. Dan Cox, Jim Stuart, and
Bob Malottki were the star ballhandlers.
The Warriors will be looking to an even
better season next year, but will be
hampered by the loss of several
graduating seniors. The seniors were led
by Larry Ripka, Forrest Swan, and Steve
Rains.

YEARBOOK
The yearbook staff labors every
day to assemble a kaleidoscope of mem-

tragedy, humor, and excitement, bind-
ing these together in one fabulous edi-
tion of the yearbook. Forced to comply
with deadlines, meet schedules, and keep
appointments, all would be chaos, with-

Warrior Cheerleaders
Some of the familiar sounds heard at all
Granite High sport events are: "G-R-A-N-
I-T-E"; "Team, Team, Team"; and
"Warriors Fight"; which are led by the high
spirited voices of the GCHo cheerleaders,
backing the Warriors all the way.
The cheerleaders are chosen for their
ability, personality, and appearance, the spring
before the fall football season. They are elected
by the teachers and student body.
Miss Barbara Wunner receives credit for
the direction of the cheerleading squad.

REMEMBER
WHEN
So we close another chapter of Granite High's history by being the first class to enter
as 7th graders at both Coolidge and Prather Junior Hi "Y" parties, slam books and
school pins were the big rage Social affairs were held every Friday and Saturday
nights for members of "The Crowd" the class was split up into rival schools, and
Prather and Coolidge battled it out at every game.
Remember Coolidge's glorious win over Prather, 7-6, which brought to a close
the football season and left Coolidge undefeated when Steve fainted in Biology Class
after his T.B. test When Diane and Teresa got into a fist fight when Jim and
Rick stole angora for their girl's rings Denny's "Wild Parties" and all the trouble
they caused All the fads love chains, slam books, and double bubbles
Skating at Wilson Park Ice Rink.

A NOTE
FROM THE EDITORS
We have now come to the end of the 65-66 school year. For the sophomores and
juniors this was just another year, but for the seniors this was the end of our secondary
education. Some of us will now seek work in our nuclear powered world. Others will
further their education in colleges and universities. But, all of us will be able to look
back on this period of our lives with a sad remembrance of the good times which we
had, because on these pages we have attempted to capture the joyous atmosphere of
"high school."
The editors and staff of the 1966 Warrior hope that you enjoy our yearbook as
much as we enjoyed producing it.
